Dr. Arun Kumar, University of California, San Diego, Computer Scientist

Arun Kumar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Halicioglu Data Science Institute and an HDSI Faculty Fellow at the University of California, San Diego. He is a member of the Database Lab and Center for Networked Systems and an affiliate member of the AI Group. His primary research interests are in data management and systems for machine learning/artificial intelligence-based data analytics. Systems and ideas based on his research have been shipped as part of products from, or used internally by, multiple cloud, Web, and database systems companies, including Google, Facebook, Oracle, and VMware. He is a recipient of three SIGMOD research paper awards, five distinguished reviewer/metareviewer awards from SIGMOD/VLDB, the IEEE TCDE Rising Star Award, an NSF CAREER Award, a UCSD oSTEM Faculty of the Year Award, and research award gifts from Amazon, Google, Oracle, and VMware. His first PhD graduate received the ACM SIGMOD Jim Gray Doctoral Dissertation Award.

Jennifer Herman worked on the Mars rovers Spirit and. Opportunity for 14 years. “My daughter feels like she grew up with robot siblings. PShe currently works with the most recent Mars rovers, Curiosity and Perseverance. In the last year, she has taken on the challenge of powering the two Voyager spacecraft, launched in 1977. Patrick Murphy works on Woodwell’s Arctic Carbon Monitoring Network, ensuring that instruments are installed, maintained, and repaired to provide the highest quality data.
Murphy has worked in permafrost ecosystems since 2011, studying the interrelationship between the physical functions of the Arctic tundra and the organisms that live there. His master’s degree research at the University of Arizona centered on water and temperature stresses in native pine species.

Robert Sinkovits, Ph.D. leads the scientific applications efforts at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. He has collaborated with researchers spanning many fields including physics, chemistry, astronomy, structural biology, finance, ecology, climate, immunology and the social sciences, always with an emphasis on making the most effective use of high end computing resources. Before returning to SDSC, he was the primary developer of the AUTO3DEM and IHRSR++ software packages used for solving the structures of icosahedral and helical macromolecular structures, respectively. He is the co-PI for the NSF Comet and Voyager supercomputer awards, co-PI of the XSEDE project and the co-lead of the Human Vaccines Project’s Bioinformatics Hub. He’s also an avid cyclist and mountain climber, having summited more nearly 400 peaks.

Silvia was born in Italy and lived in the UK, Sweden, Australia and the US, following her passion for science. Silvia first obtained her Bachelor Degree in Biotechnology from the University of Trento with an experimental thesis in developmental biology in Italy and an internship in cancer biology in the UK. She then completed a Master of Molecular Medicine in Sweden from Uppsala University and recently (August 2021) obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Tasmania, Australia.
Silvia is also a motivated advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at UCSD, intending to make the university a safe place accessible to everyone.

Mr. Fogarty’s practice focuses on commercial litigation, insurance coverage, employment litigation, professional negligence and substantial personal injury cases, including wrongful death and sexual abuse cases. Mr. Fogarty also assists clients located in Australia, Canada, China, Germany and Singapore who do business in the United States and assists clients located in the United States with their business relationships in Australia, which is where Mr. Fogarty grew up.
Before founding Fogarty Law Group PLLC, Mr. Fogarty’s prior law firm affiliations include practicing in the Seattle offices of Preston, Gates & Ellis, LLP (now K&L Gates) and Williams, Kastner & Gibbs LLP and in the Houston office of the international law firm, Fulbright & Jaworski LLP.
