Mashup Madness! - Creative Ways of Combining Data and Information for the Classroom
Mashups are web applications that combine content from multiple sources into a single program, all through the web. Map mashups were the first to really catch on, but now numerous other web services such as Flickr, Amazon, Yahoo, Google, and YouTube all make it possible for you to mix and match their services into a single web application and embed them into your own classroom web pages. This workshop introduces teachers to great examples of some of the most popular tools being used to create mashups and provides some examples of ways you and your students can use mashups in the classroom for geography, science, history, and current events.

San Diego Mesa College Geospatial Workshops for Teachers, 2008 - 2009
San Diego Mesa College was recently awarded state SB70 grants to work with teachers in learning and applying geospatial technologies. The grants focus on collaborative efforts between Mesa College faculty, high school and middle school staff, and industry professionals to build innovative and interactive learning modules for the classroom. The modules will incorporate geospatial technologies—including geographic information systems (GIS, computer mapping) and global positioning systems (GPS)—powerful spatial awareness, visualization, and problem-solving tools with promising and growing career potential.
A series of workshops will begin in October and additional workshops will be added in 2009. The current schedule is:
Environmental & Natural Resources – offered both October 18 and October 25, 20098
IT/Modeling your School Workshop – offered November 15, 2008
Energy/Utilities Workshop – offered February 14, 2009
Public Services Workshop – offered March 21, 2009
The environmental and natural resources portion of the program focuses on the combination of three important analysis tools: GIS, GPS, and environmental probes. These work together to provide a powerful platform on which to collect and graph data, map locations, and conduct further analysis to determine patterns and predict outcomes over space and time.
