UCSD Invites High School and Undergraduate Students to a National Computing Conference
XSEDE13 National High Performance Computing Conference Student Day

Wednesday, July 24, 2013 – San Diego Marriott Marquis Hotel and Marina

The San Diego Supercomputer Center, the University of California, San Diego, XSEDE and the National Science Foundation is inviting high school and undergraduate students to participate in one of the premier high performance computing conferences in the country as part of Student Day. This exciting opportunity provides students with a chance to immerse themselves in the field of computational science research. Student participants will have a chance to meet peers with similar interests from across the country during a day filled with hands-on science, a bioinformatics panel discussion with national leaders in the field, student focused talks, a luncheon where you will share a table with a researcher of your choice, a student poster session, highlighted internships and a visualization showcase. Registration fee: $25.00
The complete registration fee is being supplemented by the National Science Foundation.

Middle and High School Summer 2013 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Art Workshops

Summer 2013 will be a summer of fun and learning at the San Diego Supercomputer Center on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. Summer offerings range from animation creation to programming to app development to GIS and 3D printing to game development and much more! Workshops are open to students in middle and high school but please see each individual workshop description, as some workshops are specific to high school students only. We look forward to seeing you this summer!

UCSD and TSRI’s SMART Team Program for High School Students is Now in its Fifth Year!

The San Diego-based SMART Team program is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute-supported pre-college science outreach program aimed at introducing high school students to basic concepts of protein structure and function. The goal of the program is to involve students in a series of innovative activities focused on protein structure in which students work with research labs to design and build a physical model of the protein being investigated in a local research lab.

UC San Diego Computer Scientists Develop First-person Player Video Game That Teaches How to Program in Java
UCSD News

University of California, San Diego (UCSD) researchers have developed CodeSpells, an immersive, first person player video game designed to teach students how to program in Java. The researchers tested the game on a group of 40 girls, ages 10 to 12, who had never been exposed to programming before. The researchers found that within just one hour of play, the girls had mastered some of Java's basic components and were able to use the language to create new ways of playing with the game.

Newton’s Laws of Gravity: From the Celestial to the Terrestrial

Understanding Newton's laws and its consequences on Earth and in space can be a challenge for students, as well as for teachers. Join physicist, project ASTRO ambassador Philip Blanco as he makes the basic ideas worked out by Galileo, Newton and others accessible and engaging with experiments, animations, and selected video clips from our recent but rich history of space exploration.

Earthquake Science: Beyond Static Images and Flat Maps

In this seismology-focused workshop, Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Debi Kilb provides educators with ways to make Earth Science curriculum exciting. Learn the basics of seismology, where to access real-time data and information about earthquakes, and how to interactively explore multidimensional seismic data.
