The Education group at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) offers a
wide range of community outreach programs that bring cutting-edge research and
science curriculum to students, teachers and parents. SDSC provides support to
both local and national entities that promote mathematics and science education
for K-12, undergraduate, and graduate level students. The San Diego

Newton’s Laws of Gravity: From the Celestial to the
Terrestrial

How can you effectively teach Newton's laws? By having
students discover them for themselves!
Are astronauts in Earth orbit
really "weightless"? Have you and your students ever felt weightlessness? (The
answer is YES!). Can a feather and a hammer both fall at the same rate?
Understanding Newton's laws and its consequences on Earth and in space can be a
challenge for students, as well as for teachers who do not have a strong physics
background. However, the basic ideas worked out by Galileo, Newton and others
can be made accessible and engaging with a combination of in class experiments,
"thought experiments" realized by animations, and selected video clips from our
recent but rich history of space exploration. Participants will receive a CD
filled with video clips and take-away activities that will be ready to implement
in your classroom.

UCSD And TSRI’s SMART Team Program for High
School Students
RasMol Training: Saturday,
October 24, 2009, 9:00am- 12:00pm
The San Diego-based SMART Team
program is a new Howard Hughes Medical Institute-supported pre-college science
outreach program aimed at introducing high school students to basic concepts of
protein structure and function. The program aims to involve students in a series
of innovative activities focused on protein structure in which students work
with research labs to design and build a physical model of the protein being
investigated in a local research lab. .
