"Research Experiences for Undergraduates" (REU) is a program funded through the National Science Foundation that gives university undergraduates opportunities to spend a summer working with a scientist. Under the joint guidance of their advisor and a scientist at SDSC, REU students learn research skills and gain insight into the content and practice of a scientific field that interests them.

The objective of the SDSC REU program is to engage a diversified pool of talented undergraduate students in computational science research with SDSC partners, serving our long-term goal of developing the next generation of computational scientists. Therefore, this program emphasizes the involvement of women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities. The SDSC REU program goes beyond the standard supplemental REU program, upon which it is based, by integrating students into existing multidisciplinary research teams and thereby into the national computational science effort.

We are asking SDSC partners to propose exciting opportunities for undergraduate students who will work with their research teams in the coming year.

The SDSC REU program is designed to create research experiences that encourage interactions among the students and scientific mentors working on common projects from multiple partner locations. The ultimate goal is to broaden participation in computational science. Each student will work with a research group at one of the partner sites. This group and the responsible PI will act as the immediate supervisor and mentor for the student. In addition, students will be encouraged and enabled to have substantial and frequent interactions with all project collaborators. Through team interactions, students will attain a larger peer group and will experience modern interdisciplinary research.

Summer 2009PAID RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS FOR UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTSvia CRA-W/CDC Distributed REU

Application Deadline  February 15, 2009

The CRA-W/CDC Distributed Research Experiences for Undergraduates (DREU)Program is a highly selective program that matches promising undergraduates with a faculty mentor for a summer research experience at the faculty member's home institution.  The objective of the DREU is to increase the number of women and students from underrepresented groups entering graduate studies in the fields of computer science and engineering.

The DREU experience is invaluable for students who are consideringgraduate school, providing them with a close-up view of what graduate school is really like and also increasing their competitiveness as an applicant for graduate admissions and fellowships.

Funding for the student consists of $6000 for the summer (10 weeks),plus relocation travel assistance when appropriate.  Additional fundsmay be available to support student conference travel, either duringthe summer or afterward, and for outreach activities promoting the DREU.

An on-line Application for students and faculty mentors, more
information about DREU, and webpages authored by previous participants are available at:
