Middle School Earth Science Animations and
Curriculum The ultimate goal is to make scientific data, fresh from
the field, readily available for K-12 teachers and students to use to enhance
their understanding of earth science. This will require both installation of
specialized hardware and development of pertinent software. This website is the
first step in that process in that it provides background and introduction earth
science materials needed for true understanding of current scientific research.
This material will be useful for all earth science teachers. The curriculum
covered here is correlated with the State of California Science Standards for
K-12 education.
This project was named "OptIPuter" because it will utilize a high-bandwidth
optical national network. It is the first project developed jointly between the
SDSC Education Department, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, the Preuss School
UCSD and the Cal-(IT)2 OptIPuter project. This project has been designed to
explore innovative techniques in education using technology by developing a
model classroom at the Preuss School UCSD.
Interactive Mapping Web-tools and lessons:
This educational project, called "Discover our Earth", provides
resources related to plate-tectonics, such as earthquakes, volcanoes and
topography. Using interactive mapping applications, students can map
earthquakes, volcanoes and topography in any part of the world, study the
effects of sea level changes and map the local geology of any location in the
United States.
