Background

Zooplankton serve as indicators of environmental conditions. They are sensitive to variations in water quality. They respond to low dissolved oxygen, high nutrient levels, toxic contaminants, poor food quality or abundance and predation. The zooplankton measured in the CalCOFI project are typically in the range of 20 millimeters to 2 meters in size.

Creating a geo-referenced visualization of a complex two-dimensional dataset that varies in time is indeed a challenging endeavor. Typically, one would expect to use an advanced and expensive scientific visualization tool such as AVS. Luckily, free tools exist to accomplish just such a goal, NCSA Databridge and Easy-Viz.
